Why Some People Leave Bend Oregon, And Why Most Never Do

I believe in being honest with people who are considering a move to Bend. So let me tell you something most real estate agents will not say: some people move here and eventually leave. Here is why, and why the vast majority of people who make the move stay for life.

Why Some People Leave

The cost. Bend is not cheap. Housing costs have risen dramatically over the past decade and show no signs of returning to where they were. Families on tight budgets can find it genuinely difficult to make the numbers work long term, especially as property taxes and the overall cost of living have climbed alongside home prices.

The traffic. Bend has grown fast and the infrastructure has not always kept pace. Certain corridors, Highway 97, the roundabouts on the westside, can get genuinely congested during peak hours. People who moved here expecting a sleepy small town sometimes find the reality jarring.

The amenities gap. Bend does not have a major airport with direct flights everywhere, a major sports team, a large hospital system for specialized care, or the cultural infrastructure of a city like Portland or Seattle. People who rely on those things sometimes find themselves making too many trips elsewhere.

The smoke. Late summer wildfire smoke is a reality across the entire Pacific Northwest and it can be significant in bad years. For people with respiratory issues or a low tolerance for air quality events, it can be a genuine quality of life concern.

Why Most People Never Leave

Here is what I observe after nearly twenty years selling real estate in Bend. The people who move here for the right reasons, the outdoors, the community, the lifestyle, the pace, almost never want to leave. They get here and within months they cannot imagine living anywhere else.

The Deschutes River trail becomes part of their daily routine. They find their community. Their kids grow up knowing their neighbors. They ski on weekday mornings and hike on weekend afternoons and eat at restaurants where the owners know their names.

The people who leave are usually the ones who came for the wrong reasons, chasing a real estate investment, following a trend, or relocating without fully understanding what Bend is and is not. The people who come because they genuinely love this kind of life stay forever.

I always tell buyers: be honest with yourself about why you want to move to Bend. If the answer is the lifestyle, the outdoors, the community, the pace, you are going to love it here. If the answer is anything else, let’s talk through it first.
