Bend-La Pine Schools is the district that serves most of Bend, and it performs well by Oregon standards. There are strong elementary schools throughout the city, and Summit High School and Mountain View High School both have solid reputations. Like any school district, quality varies some by school, so I always recommend that relocating families do their homework on specific schools in the neighborhoods they are considering.

Bend is still small enough that it feels like a community. You run into people you know at the farmers market, at the trailhead, at the brewery. Kids grow up knowing their neighbors. That is increasingly rare in the United States and it is one of the things families treasure most about living here.

I want to be honest with you. Bend is not cheap. Housing costs have risen significantly over the past decade. Families on tight budgets will find it challenging. But families who can make the numbers work consistently tell me it is worth it, because what they get in quality of life, safety, and community is hard to put a price on.
