Bend Oregon Schools Guide: What Families Need to Know Before They Move

For families relocating to Bend Oregon, schools are one of the most important questions on the list. As a Bend Oregon realtor since 2007 who has helped hundreds of families find their home here, I get asked about schools constantly. Here is an accurate, honest guide to what you need to know.

The District: Bend-La Pine Schools

Most of Bend falls within the Bend-La Pine Schools district, which serves around 19,000 students across the city and surrounding areas. The district performs well by Oregon standards and has a reputation for strong programs, engaged teachers, and good community support. Oregon as a state has faced education funding challenges over the years, and Bend-La Pine is not immune to those pressures, but it consistently outperforms the state average.

The Four High Schools in Bend

Bend has four public high schools, more than most people realize when they are researching the area.

Summit High School, Located on the westside of Bend, Summit is one of the most well-known high schools in the district. Strong academics, athletics, and college prep programs. Families on the westside typically feed into Summit.

Bend Senior High School, One of the oldest high schools in Central Oregon with a strong tradition and a loyal alumni base. Located closer to downtown Bend, Bend High has a rich history and a well-rounded program.

Mountain View High School, Located on the eastside of Bend, Mountain View serves the growing northeast and southeast parts of the city. Strong athletics and a solid academic program.

Caldera High School, A newer addition to the district, Caldera opened to serve the growing south and southeast areas of Bend. It has quickly built a reputation as a strong school with an engaged community.

Which High School Would Your Family Attend?

Which school your children attend depends on where you live in Bend. This is one of the reasons I always recommend families tell me which school they want before we start looking at neighborhoods, it significantly shapes where we focus the home search.

Elementary and Middle Schools

Elementary school quality in Bend varies somewhat by school and neighborhood, which is why I always recommend families research specific schools in the areas they are considering. Websites like GreatSchools.org can give you a quick snapshot, but talking to parents who live in the neighborhood tells you much more.

Charter and Private Options

Bend has several charter and alternative school options for families who want something different from the traditional district schools. On the private side, Cascade Christian Schools and a handful of smaller institutions serve families seeking faith-based or alternative education.
